Are you a small business owner?  If so, please sign Main Street Alliance’s petition for responsible taxes.  Below is the text of the petition:

As small business owners, we recognize the importance of investing in our communities. Investments in good roads, clean water and air, quality education, and local economic development foster the conditions for small businesses to thrive. That’s why we support responsible tax policies that generate the resources to make these investments.

When big corporations and the wealthiest Americans skirt their tax responsibilities, small businesses like ours pay the price: more of the tax burden shifts onto us, and forced cuts in local budgets siphon money out of our local economies. That’s why, as small business owners, we support allowing tax cuts for the two highest-income tax brackets to expire on schedule at the end of this year, restoring an important revenue stream for investments in our communities.

Make no mistake, extending tax cuts for the richest Americans isn’t the way to help small businesses. Only a small fraction – estimated at 3 percent, or 1 out of 33 small businesses – would benefit from extending the cuts for the top two tax brackets. The way to help small businesses is to allow these high-end cuts to expire. This will generate tens of billions of dollars each year that can be reinvested in real help for small businesses – things like a community jobs program that puts Americans back to work and restores our customer base, or a payroll tax holiday that injects money into local economies.

We’re doing our part. It’s time to restore responsible tax policies that support small businesses and local economies while ensuring that the wealthiest Americans are contributing their fair share.

* The top two income tax brackets include family income over $250,000/year and single filer income over $200,000/year.
